In Dutch hundreds of words and phrases exist to explain rain: MAIUM is one of them. It is a word from the ‘Bargoens’ dialect that can mean rain, water and even canal – we have quite a few of those in Amsterdam.
Use the word Maium
‘Als ik MAIUM op m’n porem krijg dan gaan ik pleite’ – a saying that means, if the rain falls on my head I am leaving.
We are two friends from Amsterdam that grew up biking through the rain and saw traditional rainwear lacking both style and function. Inspired by years of wet commutes, we set out to design rainwear that adapts to the typical Dutch unpredictable weather conditions in combination with a busy lifestyle. Designer Anita: “We came across the problem of getting our clothes wet from the rain every time we moved from A to B, whether it was a business meeting, going to a friend or heading to a festival. That’s why we bring MAIUM: we want you to travel in style, knowingly that your clothes are guarded. A designer raincoat that can easily be transformed into a poncho using the side zippers. An innovative solution to keep you looking good. No matter the weather.
MAIUM is a product of its environment. With at least 130 days of rain every year, and more than one third of the Netherlands below sea level, we have a reputation for innovative ways of staying dry. Our raincoats are made to protect you from the elements, through innovation in design, function and materials. Our signature side zippers for example, allow for either a walk in the rain or transforming into a highly functional poncho to use on your bike or scooter. Also, the garments being made of recycled plastic PET bottles and without the use of animal products are some of the innovations in which MAIUM invests.
How To Use
All our front zippers are waterproof and have two-way functionalities. If by any chance the zipper gets stuck, we recommend greasing it with a drop of silicone gel or spray.
All our coats are washable at 30C without affecting the coating of the jacket.
Hang a wet raincoat out to dry, preferably on a hanger. Also in dry state raincoats should always be on a hanger to preserve form. Tell friends about your experience with a MAIUM raincoat. Except and accept compliments.
Leave a wet raincoat folded or crammed in a dark place like a bag. Iron your raincoat. Put your raincoat in the drier. Forget your coat after Friday drinks or leave it at a festival.
Open signature zippers on each side. Throw the front panel over the handlebars. Grab handlebars through bike holes. Or just hang loose.
Ethics in Sourcing
The fashion industry is one of the most environmentally harmful industries in the world, which is why it is crucial that forward-thinking designers use their mind to combine fashion and design to create sustainable, functional and unique alternatives. MAIUM uses responsibly sourced fabric that is not only highly durable and waterproof: it is also made from recycled plastic bottles. Rainwear is, by definition, designed to protect us from the elements. Our attempt to restore the link to nature by incorporating sustainable design practices, is our way to return the favor and to protect the elements against us and our influences too, proving that fashion and innovation doesn’t have to cost the earth.
All materials used are either fabricated from recycled plastic or are completely biodegradable. In our coats, we use a variation of materials such as Recycled PET, Organic Cotton, Pongee and PU.
All our raincoats are fully waterproof at water column 3.000 or 5.000.
All our Pongee, Lightweight and Organic Cotton coats have a breathability level of 5.000. All our PU coated coats are not breathable. In either case, simply open the zippers for a breath of fresh air!
All our materials are certified under GRS and OEKO-TEX(R) Standard 100 principles. Our raincoats are made from recycled plastic. The OEKO-TEX(R) label guarantees that every component of this article, every thread, button and other accessory, has been tested for harmful substances and that the article therefore is harmless in human ecological terms. The test is conducted by independent OEKO-TEX® partner institutes based on the extensive OEKO-TEX® criteria catalog. The GRS is a holistic certification for full products with recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions. The desired effect of the GRS is to provide brands with a tool for more accurate labeling, to encourage innovation in the use of reclaimed materials, to establish more transparency in the supply chain, and to provide better information to consumers. The goal of the GRS is to increase use of recycled materials in products and reduce or eliminate the harm caused by its production and reduce harmful impact of production to people and the environment. Ultimately, it provides customers (both brands and consumers) with a tool to make informed decisions about production and sourcing and reduces the harmful impact of production to people and the environment.
