MAIUM

Maium Etymology

In Dutch there are hundreds of words and sentences to talk about rain, MAIUM is one of them. It is a word from the 'Bargoens', in which it can mean 'rain', 'water' or even 'canal' – of which we have quite a few in Amsterdam.

Establishment

We are two friends from Amsterdam who grew up cycling through the rain and saw that traditional rainwear lacked both style and functionality. Inspired by years of wet bike rides, our aim is to design stylish raincoats that can adapt to unpredictable weather and busy lives. Designer Anita: “Regardless of whether we had a business meeting, visited a friend or went to a festival, there was always the risk of getting a wet suit every time we traveled from A to B. That's why we came up with MAIUM, on the road in style, knowing that you and your clothes are protected.”

Maium Word usage

‘Als ik MAIUM op m’n porem krijg dan gaan ik pleite’ – a saying that means, if the rain falls on my head I am leaving.

Innovation

MAIUM is a product of its environment. With at least 130 rainy days a year and over a third of the land below sea level, we've gained a reputation for devising innovative ways to keep ourselves dry.

USAGE

Do's

Hang a wet raincoat to dry, preferably on a hanger. Even a dry MAIUM raincoat will always have to hang on a hanger to keep its shape. Tell friends about your experiences with MAIUM. Expect and accept compliments.

Don'ts

Leaving a wet raincoat folded or crumpled in a dark place, such as in a bag. Iron your raincoat. Put your raincoat in the dryer. Forgetting your raincoat after Friday afternoon drinks or leaving it behind at a festival.

Washing instructions

Please refer to the information on the product specifications page under 'specification and size chart' for the right indication for your product in terms of washing instructions.

Zippers

All our front zippers are waterrepellent and open on both sides. If the zipper does get stuck, we recommend greasing it with a drop of silicone gel or spray.

Bike Poncho

Open the signature zippers on both sides. Throw the front panel over the steering wheel. Grab the handlebars through the special 'bicycle holes'. Or just let it hang over your knees.

PRODUCTION &MATERIALS

Difference between Puffer and Lightweight Puffer

The Lightweight Puffer is made of Pongee fabric, which increases breathability, while the Puffer is made with a Polyurethane coating. The Lightweight Puffer is 6 inches longer than the Puffer. Both are filled with recycled plastic, not down.

Certificates

Our raincoats are 90% made from post-consumer recycled plastic. The fabrics we produce are certified, demonstrating that they are actually made from recycled yarns and woven in a sustainable, ecological way, without the use of harmful substances. These certificates are issued by independent partner institutes.

Production Ethics

The fashion industry is one of the most environmentally damaging industries in the world, so it is vital that forward-thinking designers combine fashion and design to create sustainable, functional and timeless alternatives. A raincoat is, by definition, designed to protect us from the elements. The effort we make to reconnect with nature through sustainable design practices is our way of giving back and protecting the elements from us and our behavior. We want to prove that fashion and innovation don't have to spoil the planet.

PFAS-free

Our coats are PFAS-free. PFAS is the abbreviation and umbrella name for Poly and perfluoroalkyl substances. These are man-made chemicals and do not exist in our environment. As such, they are almost impossible to break down. PFAS have useful properties: they are water, grease and dirt repellent, which is why they are often used in making rainwear. There are specific "PFAS," for example, PFOA and PFOS and PFCs that can have harmful effects on humans. We do NOT use all of these chemicals in our products.

Materials

All materials used are either made from recycled plastic or are completely biodegradable. In our jackets we use a variety of materials such as recycled PET, Organic Cotton, Pongee and PU.

Water resistance

All our raincoats are completely waterproof at water column 3,000 or 5,000.

Breathability

All our pongee, lightweight and organic cotton jackets have a breathability rating of 5,000. All our PU coated jackets are not breathable. But by all means open the zips for fresh air!

Vegan

No animal substances are used in the production of MAIUM raincoats, and all raw materials are not tested on animals.

Factory audits
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"All factories we work with are BSCI audited with at least 50% have an A (highest possible score) of audited performance areas, giving confidence in fair, safe and healthy working conditions for our factory employees. In close cooperation with our production facilities, we are continuously working to further improve health and safety conditions. To further strengthen the relationship, our team visits the factories at least once a year to learn more about how and in which areas there is room for improvement and how we can take the collaboration to the next level. In times of travel restriction, we hold these meetings via video call on a monthly basis."}]}]}
Product sites

MAIUM raincoats are produced in Beijing, China, the epicenter of outerwear. All production facilities are located in Hebei province, where the factories are known for their excellence in producing technical clothing. They are regarded worldwide as the best in technological developments in the field of waterproofing.

PRODUCTSPECIFICATIES

Waterproofness

We test all our styles each season for waterproofness. To measure waterproofness, we use a hydrostatic pressure measurement machine. This technique determines how much water pressure must be applied to a fabric before it begins to leak. A piece of fabric is stretched at the bottom of a long tube about 10cm in diameter. This tube is filled with water until the water comes through the fabric. When some water just begins to come through the fabric, one measures the height in millimeters of the water in the tube. This height is the water column and the fabric can withstand that measured pressure. With a water column of 3,000mm the fabric leaks when under pressure from 3 meters of water. The higher the water column the greater the protection from rain. A fabric is generally considered waterproof if the water column is 1,000mm or more.

Below is an overview about waterproofness and its uses:

Water column - Weather conditions

1000mm to 3000mm - Resistant to light rain and moderate snow
3000mm to 5000mm - Resistant to medium rain and snow
5000mm to 10,000mm - Resistant to long drives or hikes in heavy rain and wet snow
>10,000mm - Resistant to heavy rain and downpours, wet snow and high pressure

Air Permeability

Air permeability is an important functionality of many of our jackets. Air permeability, or breathability, is a technique that allows moisture to escape from inside to outside while ensuring that water from outside does not enter. Microscopic openings are made in the TPU lamination (LINK) of our fabrics. These are smaller than water droplets, preventing water from penetrating the fabric but allowing vapor to escape. Breathability is tested using the Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR). This test measures the rate at which moisture passes through fabric. The MVTR is measured in grams per square meter of fabric per 24 hours (g/m2/24h). How to imagine this is that a fabric with a breathability of 3000g/m2/24h, can allow up to 3000 grams of moisture vapor per m2 of fabric to pass through in a 24-hour period. The higher the MVTR value, the better the fabric breathes.

Breathability - Exercise
>3000 g/m2/24h - Light exertion, such as normal cycling
>5000 g/m2/24h - Heavy exertion, such as hard cycling

It is important to note that breathability measurements are influenced by factors such as fabric construction, thickness and any coatings or treatments applied to the fabric. In addition, individual perception of breathability may vary depending on your activity, environmental factors and personal preferences.
